When I mix heroin and battery acid, I get this rash.

I am sort of doing NaNoWriMo, and when I say sort of, I mean I am writing lots but it's not quite a NaNo project. It's more a chance to mop up odds and ends, which is what I did the last time I gave it a go. But what I really enjoy about the whole thing is the connection with friends also slogging their way to a word count. Community is essential to making art, I reckon. Community and caffeine.

Had a big week, with going to Skyfall (the dog's nuts) on Tuesday, epic Dim Sum on Wednesday as a belated birthday present, and Robyn - fucking Robyn, I adore her - on Thursday. Went with Ms. Plum, and we'd been waiting since March or April for it. Totally wonderful, I had a big dance and sang along all dewy-eyed.

Before I forget -

Books read October:

Baby, I Don't Care: Robert Mitchum by Lee Server (this book is completely boss)
The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West (I had mentally shelved this in the 'worthy books I must get to someday even though they'll be hard work' section in my mind. Turns out it was no work at all - I loved it).
Wild by Cheryl Strayed (yep, Dear Sugar. Also, a pal of mine is quoted on the dust jacket, which is super cool).

I also dipped in to a bunch of anthologies, including the great Sister Spit book I bought in City Lights. And I read Jodi Picoult's Love & Murder Wonder Woman storyline.

What did you think of Wild?

I enjoyed it - to sound a bit Amazon-reviwery I'd say it was above average. It didn't change my life or move me to tears, though I can see how if it hit you in a tender stage of your life it would. I feel like she wrote it with relatively modest ambitions, which really helps the book - as in, she's writing about her huge life-changing things but in a very clear-eyed way.
